Justin Grammens
Welcome, AIoT / IoT Weekly Readers - this is issue 154 and we are thrilled to have you here. Thank you for reading our newsletter and for spreading the word.
I'm fired up for where all of these exciting technology trends in the area of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence is going! If you recall from the last issue, I was on a series of panels for Startup Week. It was awesome and they were all live-streamed fro archival, but the organizers are busy pulling the content together this week. Once they share it with me, I'll be sure to share a link to the archives pages so you can watch everything that was covered around Smart Cities, IoT, AI and Podcasting.
Additionally, Lab651 won a Startup Award this year as the "Corporate Champion Award" which was to recognize enterprise intrapreneurs driving innovation, collaboration, and support for Minnesota’s startup ecosystem. It was such an amazing honor to accept the award and be on stage in front of my peers celebrating the work that our team has been doing through the pandemic.
Finally, if you are receiving this newsletter, you are just 24 hours away from attending the Applied AI October meetup! We will be talking all about NLP Transformers on Large Documents and would love to have you join us to learn about how Machine Learning is being applied to text.
One note regarding sponsorship, as I've been asked before. Getting good talented employees and consultants who know IoT and AI can be hard. Please consider sponsoring an issue of this publication to instantly reach thousands of readers with a hugely diverse background in AI/IoT and AIoT. Contact me or use the form online to receive more information!
I hope you enjoy this issue and continue to join me in this journey of exploring and leveraging the power of the Internet of Things and Machine Learning. Enjoy!

Smart Farming 2021 - IoT in Agriculture: Sensors & Robotics
The UN projects that the world's population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050, causing global agricultural production to rise 69% between 2010 and 2050. To meet this demand, farmers and agricultural companies are turning to the Internet of Things for analytics and greater production capabilities.
9 IoT Applications That Will Change Everything
Whether you are a future-minded CEO, tech-driven CEO, or IT leader, you’ve come across the term IoT before. It’s often used alongside superlatives regarding how it will revolutionize the way you work, play, and live. But is it just another buzzword, or is it the as-promised technological holy grail? The truth is that Internet of Things (IoT) Applications isn’t just one thing, but a methodology of planning, implementing and using technology to achieve a wide-ranging list of benefits.
Deep Learning’s Diminishing Returns
Although deep learning's rise to fame is relatively recent, its origins are not. In 1958, back when mainframe computers filled rooms and ran on vacuum tubes, knowledge of the interconnections between neurons in the brain-inspired Frank Rosenblatt at Cornell to design the first artificial neural network, which he presciently described as a "pattern-recognizing device."
Misinformation Is About to Get So Much Worse
This is a great interview and I loved the responses that Eric Schmidt gives on a variety of topics related to AI and the future. This covers many aspects of not only AI but AIoT as well. Their conversation below has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

You Need an IoT Strategy
To stay relevant in a competitive world, companies, regardless of their size, should plan for successful IoT deployment, just like the industry behemoths.
Lab651 has the team and the experience to help build your IoT solutions. From sensors and data to machine learning and algorithms, our team has worked on some of the most challenging and interesting implementations for companies of all sizes. Let us work with you to not only build an IoT strategy, but an execution plan as well to be successful.
Security
Cybersecurity Startup Sternum Raises $27M To "Immunize" IoT Devices
Internet of Things devices are more popular than ever, yet cybersecurity remains a looming concern. The number of attacks on IoT devices more than doubled during the first six months of 2021, according to Kaspersky, and the security credentials of these devices — which often ship with easy-to-crack default passwords and insecure third-party components — is starting to attract the attention of governments.
Healthcare
Harvard Research Foregrounds AI as Colonoscopy Tool
Colonoscopy is an important weapon in the fight against colon cancer, which killed 51,000 Americans in 2019, making it the nation’s second-deadliest cancer. But doctors’ ability to catch polyps on the colonoscopy screen varies — sometimes significantly.
Artificial Intelligence Imaging Program Detects Lung Nodules That Are Likely to Become Malignant
Very promising! The article states, "Audelon said the new program identified 172 of the 177 malignant tumors in those CT scans, meaning it was 97% effective in detecting cancers. The 5 tumors that the program missed were near the center of the chest, where tumors are harder to distinguish from healthy parts of the body"
Industrial
The Future of the IoT (Batteries Not Required)
Within an industrial environment like a manufacturing plant, there are often thousands of assets that require careful attention to ensure efficient operation. An effective real-time monitoring solution must continuously stream data from each of these points to keep information flowing in a timely fashion so that stakeholders can react quickly to any issues that might interrupt operation, damage equipment, or cause safety risks and environmental harm.
