Justin Grammens
Welcome readers to another edition of the Applied AI Weekly Newsletter!
I'm Justin Grammens, your personal curator of content related to Artificial Intelligence and its real-world applications. I have a great newsletter lined up for you this week. You definitely will want to check out the leading article on "Inside the AI Factory" - it's a fascinating read.
As a reminder, this newsletter is written and managed by myself but is the result of our work with the Applied AI non-profit I co-founded called Emerging Technologies North. If you are working in an Emerging Technology and are located in the upper Midwest, please reach out. We would love to connect and collaborate.
Also, if you didn't catch it, I released both the latest podcast with Damien Reihl as we discuss the topic of The Importance of Humanity as We Bring AI and Law Together and the video of our last meetup where we talk about ML Containers Made Easy. I'm sure you will enjoy both of them!
Finally, keep your eyes open as I'll be speaking at the THAT Conference in a few weeks. My sessions will be on Artificial Intelligence, Large Language Models, and ChatGPT. Grab a ticket today and I hope to see you at the conference!

Inside the AI Factory: The Humans That Make Tech Seem Human
Much of the public response to language models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT has focused on all the jobs they appear poised to automate. But behind even the most impressive AI system are people — huge numbers of people labeling data to train it and clarifying data when it gets confused.
Computer Vision System Marries Image Recognition and Generation
Computers possess two remarkable capabilities with respect to images: They can both identify them and generate them anew. Historically, these functions have stood separate, akin to the disparate acts of a chef who is good at creating dishes (generation), and a connoisseur who is good at tasting dishes (recognition).
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis Says Its Next Algorithm Will Eclipse ChatGPT
The company is working on a system called Gemini that will draw on techniques that powered AlphaGo to a historic victory over a Go champion in 2016. DeepMind’s Gemini, which is still in development, is a large language model that works with text and is similar in nature to GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT. But Hassabis says his team will combine that technology with techniques used in AlphaGo, aiming to give the system new capabilities such as planning or the ability to solve problems.
Bot or Not? How to Tell When You’re Reading Something Written by AI
AI has gotten good at writing. Here’s how experts say you can identify it. At some point this week, you may have read a sentence written by artificial intelligence and not even known it. In the wake of the viral success of ChatGPT late last year, a growing number of tools have been launched that make it cheap and easy for nearly anyone to create convincing AI-generated text — from school essays and work emails to news articles and real estate listings.

Ex-Ford Engineer Grows AI Startup Offering Telemedicine for Cars
Michael Petersen received a "dreaded" call from his son. He was stranded on the side of a desert road on the way to California. The car overheated and Petersen, a former engineer at Ford Motor Co., had to help. His son nursed the car to the coast, where Petersen talked to a mechanic about fixing the overheating issue. He was charged $600 to change what Petersen later learned was a $40 part that would’ve taken less than an hour to replace.
AI Revolution Puts Skilled Jobs at Highest Risk
Law, medicine, and finance sectors could be among the most affected, according to the organization’s employment outlook. Major economies are on the “cusp of an AI revolution” that could trigger job losses in skilled professions such as law, medicine, and finance, according to an influential international organization.
