Greetings IoT Weekly News Readers!
Welcome to Issue 138 of the IoT Weekly Newsletter. We are back at it this week with the most interesting IoT related articles that I have discured and curated for you.
A few things to note:
- I've started a podcast on the real-world applications of Artificial Intelligence called the Conversations on Applied AI Podcast. You can subscribe from all your favorite podcast services. Please tune in and listen today!
- We have our next Applied AI meetup on Oct 1st with the topic being, "Societal Values in the Machine Learning Age" Details are on our Meetup page!
- Finally, our IoT Hackday 2020 is going VIRTUAL this year. It will run from Oct 24 through Nov 7th. It's still being formed, but you can post an idea as a captain and try to recruit other members on our DevPost website!
I hope you enjoy this issue and remember to follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook

Amazon Builds Low Power IoT Network
E-commerce and cloud giant Amazon is lining up supplier for its low power long range mesh networking project called Sidewalk for the Internet of Things (IoT).
What Is the Internet of Things? A WIRED Guide
Lightbulbs, along with refrigerators, coffee makers, microwave ovens, baby monitors, security cameras, speakers, televisions, and thermostats have, in the past few decades, transformed from ordinary objects into conduits for the future. Embedded with sensors that see, hear, and touch the world around them, they can turn physical information into digital data. Collectively, these devices—and there are billions of them around the world—make up the “internet of things.”
PuppyDoc Set to Revolutionize Pet Healthcare
Dog owners can right say Woof! to the New Dog Healthcare Management IoT Device. The device, which will be officially launched on 7th July 2020, is an innovation designed to monitor and suggest medically approved ways of keeping pets in tip-top condition at all times, ultimately helping pets and their owners enjoy every second together.
Mozilla Spins out WebThings as an Independent IoT Project
Mozilla has announced that it’s spinning out WebThings, its open-source internet of things (IoT) platform, as an independent project. The move comes shortly after the Firefox browser maker announced a major restructuring of its corporate division, leading to 250 layoffs — a quarter of its workforce — alongside plans to “tighten and refocus” its product lineup.

3 Blockchain Patterns That Can Ensure Security for IoT
The Internet of things (IoT) and blockchain are among the latest buzzwords with steadily increasing popularity since the time of their creation. It’s no exaggeration when we say that the IoT is soon going to be a part of our day-to-day activities to make lives easier and more convenient.
Most IoT Hardware Dangerously Easy to Crack
A vast majority of IoT hardware in homes and offices is vulnerable to attacks that allow devices to be easily taken over and manipulated for malicious purposes. Few device manufacturers or security researchers are paying nearly as much attention to this issue as they are to software vulnerabilities, according to Marc Rogers, white hat hacker and executive director of cybersecurity at Okta.
IoT Device Security: Comparing Cellular, LoRa, & WiFi
When it comes to connectivity options for IoT solutions, WiFi, LoRa and Cellular connectivity are typically the most discussed options. Though it undoubtedly depends on the use case, traditional day-to-day WiFi is usually dismissed first–at least for any use cases other than consumer applications like the smart home.
Big Data
Database Heterogeneity Helps Address IoT Analytics Challenges
Data analytics was once limited to a few general-purpose relational databases. But, as large-scale web and Internet of Things applications proliferated, that situation has changed.
Machine Vision Will Have a Huge Impact on the IoT
We’ve all heard the phrase “work smarter, not harder.” The Internet of Things (IoT) helps people and companies live and work more efficiently as they gain more control over their workflows and greater insights into the data they yield.
The IoT is potent on its own, but the technology known as “machine vision” will reveal additional consequential ways to put it to work in the enterprise. With machine vision, industries are using the IoT to automate their processes and cut down on labor costs.

7 Layers: IoT Part 1 — You, Me, and IoT
In this episode of 7 Layers, your host, Connor Craven wades into Internet-of-Things infested waters. In the first section, he gives examples of consumer and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) devices and how they can be used. In the second section, he covers how IoT devices use 4G and 5G networks as well as different IoT-specific services offered by different telecoms.
