Welcome! The huge story this past week was Amazon offering cloud based services tuned specifically for the IoT. For fun I also included articles from the week prior on Microsoft's Azure service and Salesforce now supporting a number of IoT services. The fact that Amazon, Microsoft and Salesforce are jumping into the IoT is validation that they are seeing a need in the market and providing services to those who need them. I see this as a great time for being involved with the Internet of Things!

To that point, I cover a few stories of personal interest to me on Security and Big Data. These vectors of the IoT are keys to the future and where great innovation and value is being built today.

Amazon Launches AWS IoT

This was the big news of the week. Amazon steps in to offer a managed cloud platform that, "lets connected devices easily and securely interact with cloud applications and other devices." As Amazon pretty much invented the SaS based model, it was just a matter of time before they jumped in. I've already starting experimenting with the service and will be posting my thoughts in a future long form post on what I see are its strengths and weaknesses. For now though, its in BETA and i recommend you check it out!

Azure IoT Suite Now Available

Like what we now seeing from Amazon around services for the IoT, Microsoft has jumped in, arguably ahead of Amazon, and is providing a number of services on their Azure platform specifically focused on IoT. Seeing large companies like Amazon and Microsoft, along with a whole list of others launch services to specifically target this space is a good sign that the industry is maturing to the point of causing tangible solutions to be built on their cloud based services.

Salesforce.com Spreads Its Wings into the Internet of Things

The Salesforce IoT Cloud, the new service (which should be available early next year) is Salesforce’s attempt to cash in on the user data streaming off of connected devices, mobile apps, and websites.

With ATMEL owning a huge market in the low power, microcontroller market and seeing how big name players like Intel, Microsoft and others are pushing hard to get into the early stage space where hackers and entrepreneurs are building the next solutions it was only a matter time when they would be acquired. With storage space being so cheap the common tactic is to "get all the things". As Big Data evolves I predict that we will start seeing companies "get all the RIGHT things".
